Dash In in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I recently had an interesting travel excursion. Fitbit, a tracker that keeps track of miles walked or run is a form of travel. You travel around your neighborhood, to or from the gym, perhaps local parks to get your steps in.......miles in. You travel miles. A Fitbit friend from Canada, Sandy R. and I have been connected as friends for a long time on line in various Fitbit Groups. Her hubby was doing business in Fort Wayne Indiana, which is about a 2.5 hour drive for me from Columbus, Ohio.
Sandy and I made plans to meet up--face to face--while her hubby was taking care of business. We stayed downtown at the Convention Center (other pictures later), this restaurant was within walking distance of our hotels and came highly recommended by the hotels front desk.
It didn't disappoint. Lots of very good options at Dash-In. The restaurant has a lot character, friendly staff and excellent food.
This was my lunch, wonderful homemade soup, (tomato bisque). It was a good day for hot soup, as it was quite chili and windy out.
Sandy also opted for half a sandwich and soup. We both enjoyed our meals and would indeed recommend this restaurant. What a joy it was too meet face to face after talking daily on line for YEARS. We had a wonderful lunch and never stopped finding things to talk about.
If you have the opportunity to travel to Fort Wayne, Indiana...please do take time to get a drink and a meal at Dash In. I would indeed go back.
Would love to know if any of you have let your Fitbit lead you to interesting travels. Please let me know in the comments.
PLEASE leave me a comment when you come visit, so I know you were here. Your visits and comments are very special to me. AND remember, leave your name and url and not your google+ profile link or your blogger profile link. Name and url takes me right to your blog post so I can reciprocate the visit. Profile pages do not.

Indianapolis, Indiana
As you travel around downtown Indianapolis you'll want to park your car and walk. There's much to see. Hubby recently had business in town so I joined him for an evening. The center of downtown has this large very imposing monument to those lost in The Civil War. It is dated 1865. Streets go out almost like spokes of a wheel from here. Making the monument very accessible and visible from many different locations through the downtown area. This was a drive by shot, as we were short on time. Though we have walked this on other trips, and I highly recommend it.
The evening I got to down we took a little walk around the area after his meetings were over. Was dusk, thus the pictures are a bit dark. Indy has done a nice job blended old and new; business and residential.
This too was within walking distance of our hotel. In fact just a block away if that. This is The Canal Walk at dusk. Small children are enjoying running through the sprinklers on the left as the grass is being watered. The walk way is used by bikers and walkers alike. People of all ages seem to be enjoying the pretty landscaped area. The Canal Walk runs along part of The Old Central Canal which was funded by the city back in 1830. It's intent was to connect The Wabash and Erie Canals for increased trade; though it was never a success and had financial problems. Historically throughout the country the canal days were short lived, quickly replaced by more efficient rail transportation.
Apartments, Condo's, businesses, and restaurants line the sides of the canal. Paddle-boats can be rented as you enjoy the day eating and shopping your way up and down the canal. This area is most unique in downtown Indy in that it's White River State Park. It's not common place to have a state park in a thriving downtown city; but this is certain a plus. Large pretty open areas, sculptures, flowers, and an amphitheater. Truly something for everyone.
This historic marker gives some insight into the history of a church that once stood at this location. Directly across the street from this historic sign is a wonderful park for children to play in, pets to run in, families to picnic in and enjoy themselves under shade trees. While just a short distance away is the beautiful modern skyline of prosperous Indianapolis.
And a short distance away a residential neighborhood with many historic restored homes. This is A B & B, The Nestle Inn. I spent a weekend here a few years back with some good friends. It's fabulous, I highly recommend it.
Across the street from our hotel was a neighborhood pub that was hoping on a Friday night with dining in, dining up and out, as well as dining on the sidewalk area. We managed to get up and out, thankfully as inside is very smoky. Indy has not yet joined much of The US in banning smoking indoors. The weekend we were there, Indy was hosting a large motorcycle race at The Brickyard. No doubt these bikers came to enjoy it. We saw tons of bikers and interesting bikes.
This though was probably the most unique of those we saw. lol

Traveling with Flat Stanley in Illinois and Indiana
click picture to enlarge and see detail
Do you know Flat Stanley? Has your child or grandchild done a Flat Stanley project at school? It's fun, it's educational. A co-worker's nephew is doing a Flat Stanley project and so we're doing what we can to add to his project. I took my Flat Stanley tailgating last wkend; but due to the old camera only working some of the time. The pictures I thought I had....weren't there. Errrrrrrrrr, I so need a new camera. My regular camera broke while on vacation a couple of weeks ago, thus I've been trying to use the old one. Very frustrating. So, while Flat Stanley was appropriately colored to be Buckeye for tailgating, those pictures are non existent.
He also traveled with hubby and I last wkend to St. Louis with a car load of stuff for our daughter. On the way back we made a couple of stops and Flat Stanley got his picture taken in Indiana, and in Illinois. These 2 pictures with The Bison and TeePee were taken in Illinois on US Route 70 exit 76. This is a fun stop for all. The kids will love the TeePee and The Bison, parents will love the very unique gift shop; and furry friends have some room to roam and stretch their legs. It's not the first time we've stopped here; nor will it be the last.

Here's Stanley in Indiana, again on US Route 70. He got his picture taken by a nice memorial to our men and women in service. The Blue Star Highways were started as a way to honor our military after the close of World War II, by ladies garden clubs all across the country.
If you'd like to join in on the project it would be great. You can color your own Flat Stanley and take him places, photograph it and email it to me. Or...you could take my Flat Stanley, print it and go visiting. It's a geography lesson primarily for this particular group of kids; but the kids learn so many other things as well. I like to add some history info, they can find locations on the map etc. It started out as a way to get kids to write letters, to journal; but there are many possibilities. Let me know if you're interested. Here's a link if you'd like to color your own Flat Stanley
