Hilton Head, South Carolina in Pictures

Salty Dog Cafe, in South Beach a popular destination in Hilton Head.  Bloody Mary at the outside bar area.

Iconic Harbour Town Lighthouse.  You can tour the lighthouse museum.  The construction to the left of the lighthouse is for a large restaurant with outside space called The Quarter Deck, scheduled to be open in time for The Heritage Golf Classis in mid April.

Miles and miles of walking and or bike paths Hilton Head Island.  Most rental properties rent bikes, and there are private businesses with bike rentals on the island as well.  You can rent by day, or by the week.

Daufuskie Island a short ferry ride from Hilton Head, about a third of the size of Hilton Head Island is a popular day trip.  Ferry over, rent a golf cart and cruise the island.  It's historic, and probably looks the way Hilton Head did before the bridge was built which caused the island to grow by leaps and bounds.  Pat Conroy's "Prince of Tides", put the island on the map.

Grande Ocean, one of 7 Marriott Time Shares on the island.  Not the best picture folks, but this resort is in the middle of the island with garden views, ocean front views and ocean side views.  A beautiful resort right on the beach.

A beautiful Camelia at Honey Horn Coastal Park.  There is much to see and do at Honey Horn.  I blogged about it HERE.  There are many varieties to view.

A map of the island showing the locations of the 7 Marriott Time Shares.  The island is shaped like a foot with Harbour Town in the toe.

Marriott''s Harbour Pointe and Sunset Pointe, in Shelton Cove are located mid Island.  This is the pool and sundeck area.  There's a large shopping center at Shelter Cove for dining and shopping.

Pretty flowers abound everywhere on the island.

If you've not traveled to Hilton Head, put it on your bucket list of places to travel

Marriott's Ford Colony, Williamsburg, Virginia

The outside of our building at Marriott's Ford Colony in Virginia.  All the buildings are very Colonial in appearance, which is of course most appropriate given it's Williamsburg.  Well sorta.  Let me give you a mini amount of background.  This area just a short 10-ish minutes from Historic Williamsburg was previously known as Middle Plantation, but not the historic Middle Plantation.  Historic Middle Plantation is what became Williamsburg.  This area, Fords Colony is a premium planned community that really only came to be in about 1983, when in 1982 Middle Plantation Community failed.

The land originally was part of the territory of the Powhatan Chief (father of Pocahontas).  The area was involved in many conflicts/wars; but how it was passed from The Powhatan Chief to Middle Plantation and then Ford's Colony, I don't know.

All units here are 2 Bedroom, 2 bath units with a screened porch.  On this particular trip, our unit is the first floor you see there on the left.  Buildings face each other in this section with a nice courtyard in the middle.

Walking around the corner (our building is the one to the right of the sidewalk), you see well manicured lawns and landscaping.  It's a very pretty resort with a warm comfortable feel to it.

This is the office where you check in.  Again you see the well manicured and maintained public spaces.

Small, but well appointed kitchen.

The bar area separating the kitchen from the dining room.

Lovely living room with fireplace on the right and out the sliding door is the screened porch where we spent a good deal of time.

You can see why we spent a good deal of time on the porch.  It was quite peaceful to read, knit, and or have our evening cocktails.

The 2nd bedroom with 2 closets, and sofa between.  Leading into the 2nd bedroom is the washer and dryer in a closet, next to the bathroom.  The suite is very nice with plenty of room.

Master bedroom.  A desk to the left of the bed, dresser to the right and a 2nd dresser not visible in the picture was the left of the end window.

Nice double sinks in the Master Bedroom.  There's both a jetted soak tub, and a separate shower in the Master Suite.

A bit blurry as I zoomed in to get hubby getting out of his golf cart.  Marriott's Ford Colony is situated right on a golf course.  Many of the Villas have a golf course view, though this trip; we didn't.  I was out walking when I spotted him.  There are 60 clubs with tennis and golf being very popular activities in Ford's Colony Planned Community.  You're close to Historic Jamestown as well, so plenty to do in the area.  However, it's also a good place to just relax, which is what we did.  We've been to both Jamestown and Williamsburg on other trips and just enjoyed the peace during this Covid trip.  We were able to cook in our villa, stay socially distant from other people and just enjoy our time away from home.

I walk almost daily.  Try to get 5 ish miles a day.  The walking and or biking path here is beautiful and mostly shaded.  The loop is about 4.5 miles and is scenic.  You're walking around the golf course.

And the gated housing community of Ford's Colony.  I walked, but bikes are available for rent through Marriott's Ford Colony on a daily or weekly basis.  They even have those trailer attachments for families with young children.

We enjoyed our time at Marriott's Ford Colony and plan to return.  As a Marriott Timeshare Member, golf is included with your stay.  You get a punch card with a number of free games.  On our first stay here, many years ago the number of games you got depending on your membership level.  This trip we got free golf daily.  Hubby played 4 or 5 times during the week, and I'm a non golfer.  You do need to rent a cart; but still it's a good deal.

LeVeque Lincoln Tower for the 4th of July Celebration

This past 4th of July hubby and I did something a bit different.  We made hotel reservations at at LeVeque Lincoln, the tall thin white building you see on the left.  This is in downtown Columbus, Ohio.  For many years it was the ONLY sky scraper in the city and you could see it as you traveled north or south of the city, quite a landmark.

It's located at 50 West Broad Street and stands 555 ft and 5 inches tall.  When it was opened in 1927 it was the 5th tallest building in the country.  The Architect was C. Howard Crane.  Through out the history of the building it has held a Theater, a hotel, offices, and apartments.  It is now a part of The Autograph Collection of Marriott Boutique Hotels.

My lobby picture didn't come out very well, so this from The Marriott Webpage.
Notice the stars behind the check in desk.

And the star gazing picture and telescope in our room decor.

Throughout the hotel and webpage there are many references to Under the Stars, Beneath the Stars...navigate your way to a Luxurious stay.  The hotel has been an aerial lighthouse for Amelia Earhart...the star of the skyline.

Looking at a picture taken at nigh with the top of LeVeque Lincoln Tower being lit, you can certainly see why (though discount those other buildings, as they wouldn't have been there then).  Photo Credit again to Marriott.

A very spacious and well appointed room.
Even the vanity in the bathroom is quite attractive
It's rate for me to think a shower is spacial, but this one sure was...very pretty and spacious.

Before you head back to your room for a night of dreaming under the stars, the staff makes this happen.
I took two pictures so you could see how the galaxy on our ceiling actually changed.  It was very cool.  We came back from watching Red White, and Boom (the fireworks display), had a drink in the bar and we walked into our room, before we turned on the lights this greeted us.  AND after we got ready for bed this continued...not sure how long.  I did purposely stay awake looking up to enjoy it a while before nodding off to sleep.
Marriott's picture of the bar which was too dark for me to get a decent photo that evening.

One of the entrances to where the elevators were going up to the residences.  Look at the detail in this historic building.
AND the gorgeous elevators!

You can tell we were in a perfect spot from this aerial photo of the fireworks...almost behind the huge display in the sky you can make out the LeVeque Lincoln Tower.

A fun way to spend the Holiday!

Marriott's Marbella Beach, Spain

Welcome to Marriott's Marbella Beach Time Share in Marbella, Spain.  Hang you coat on the hook as you enter and pull up a chair.  The dining room is directly ahead and comfortably seats 6.  With a kitchen off to right in the picture.
Off the kitchen is the utility room with laundry facilities.  Down the hall from the kitchen is the 2nd bedroom with 2 comfortable beds and full bath, which is to your left looking at the picture.
Beyond the dining room is the living room and from there is the master suite.  Both bedroom are well appointment.  Love the details with Moorish style carvings, and bright colorful drapes and bedding.  Large closet on each side of the bed with a dresser across...more then ample storage.
Looking into the bathroom from the master suite, you see the beautiful tile work which is apparent throughout the apartment complex.  In Spain, the time shares are called apartments instead of villas like other locations.
Roomy, and comfortable living room with patio beyond.  This is probably the largest patio of any Marriott Time Share we've stayed in.  It was very nice!
From our patio, we had a view of The Mediterranean, pretty flowers and pool and bar areas.

We walked the beach and spotted some lovely flowers.
Our Dear Friend, Jane and hubby.  While it wasn't swim suit weather in March-April when we were there, it was still very nice.
 More pretty flowers.
 One of the pool areas.
 View from our patio.
 And the other direction.
We were pleasantly surprised by a gift of a bottle of wine in our room upon checkin, along with a nice note thanking us for our membership level.

Marriott's Marbella Beach Time Shares are 1-2 and 3 bedroom units.  The two bedroom unit has 2 full baths, living room, dining room, patio, kitchen and laundry.  The 1 BR unit also had DR, LR, Kitchen, and laundry.  I didn't see a 3 BR, but the listing indicates the same.

We found a regular coffee maker in the apartment as well as an Espresso Machine and the special coffee's to use with it, (though be aware, there is an additional charge for using those specials coffee's).  Another European difference was a bidet in the bathrooms.  Sounds like it would take extra time  to go to the bathroom using the commode and then the bidet...getting redressed etc.; but we had them here and in our accommodations in Barcelona as well.  Probably only seems strange to us Americans, which are not the majority of travelers we found staying here.  Additionally, we had nice cups and saucers in the kitchen, something not usually found in other timeshares.  In the states typically there will be large coffee mugs.  I rather liked having a nice cup and saucer.  Daily tidy service is also something we noticed here in Marbella Beach.  Normally, at time shares we take out our own trash, tidy the place, make the beds etc.  Service was a much higher level here at Marriott's Marbella Beach Club.

There are multiple pools, both inside and out.  Hot bread available daily in the market place.  The market place here is much larger and better equipped then what we're used to.  There are multiple options of dining, also right at the resort.  The first time since staying in a timeshare with a full kitchen that we've not cooked meals in.  The food in Spain, truly part of the experience.

We loved our stay and hope to return.

Don't Take a Julia Tour

Well this bus break down in a mountainous area was a bummer, but it's not the reason I do not recommend Julia Tours.  This was inconvenient and cost us about 1.5 hours of time, and we had to pay to use the bathroom facility here.
I've never had to pay to use a bathroom...but they were making some decent money on that venture.  But, as annoying as that was that's also NOT the reason I do not recommend Julia Tours.
We were picked up at our resort, Marriott's Marbella Beach before daylight.  We knew the departure time to be early and to be an estimate based on the tour description.  We were heading to Tangiers for the day, which meant a 2.5 hour bus drive, then a high speed ferry from Spain to Tangiers.    I do not recommend this tour or the Julia line for the following reasons:

  • Very disorganized.  The guide, Pedro spent his time giving driving instructions to poor Paco, our driver instead of providing us with information beyond very limited tour information.  And when he gave instructions to Paco, he was anything but nice.  Very rude infact.
  • The tour could have been better to alter how people were picked up and transported to the port for departure on the ferry.
  • Un-like all other tour buses I've been on, there were no toilet facilities which wasn't communicated, and should have been so folks could plan.
  • Due to their poor organization, we were apparently running late, causes Pedro to be even more grumpy.
  • Arriving at the port where he needed to take care of passports wasn't well done.  We sat on the bus while he went inside.  Then after his return he didn't return our passports; but waited until we were in the area to depart on the ferry...mass confusion there as there were many tour groups.  And he offered no one time to use the bathroom facilities there.  We could have been there, used the facilities while he took care of business with the passports to save time, AND or he could have passed them out on the bus which would also have saved time, been less chaotic and confusing.
  • He was rude to many people in our tour group.  Treated people like they were kindergartners.
The tour is not what it was suppose to be.
  • The description indicated you'd learn about how they make rugs...NOT That it was hardcore in your face SALES PROMOTION.  You were suppose to be able to shop in the bazarre, but they would NOT let you do that until you sat through the SALES PROMOTION.  Then there was insufficient time to actually look around at the bizarre.  Likewise at an apothecary shop, though there was a small bit of learning there it was primarily SALES.  With both situations our guide was not around and you felt at the mercy of these sales people.
  • Lunch was nice (I blogged here about it), but Pedro our guide didn't allow anyone time to eat the desert and use the bathroom.  Those who opted (like me) to rush to the bathroom had no time to eat desert as he was ushering people out the door.  Those who didn't jump to go to the bathroom got a bite or two of desert in; but that was it.
  • At each turn you felt the guide took us where he got kick backs from bringing the tourists through.
  • The touts were VERY FORCEFUL, very numerous, and would not leave you alone.  Some of this should have been controlled by the tour guide/company.  It was a very uncomfortable and stressful situation.  They forced themselves between two people walking side by side, they were in front of you, behind you and beside you.  It was often hard to even walk.  AND you didn't dare stop and loose pace with the group for fear of being lost.
I've written a review of this tour company on Travel Adviser and can see many others have as well.  It has many poor ratings and very very few good ones.  AVOID JULIA TOUR Company and select another one instead.
